Joshua Generation

As yins might know, I am a huge bluegrass fan. Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder is one of my favorite bands (and I got to see them in concert last year....coolio!). They sing a song called "Joshua Generation." It is about how we need to stand up with holy boldness in the church today as Joshua once stood.

I have been reading through the Bible again this year and am in Joshua right now. It was fun to read these verses yesterday:

Joshua 1:6-9 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." (NIV)

I wonder if I'm supposed to be strong and courageous?!?!?!?! God only tells Joshua that THREE times!!!

And the key to that? The "Book of the Law" and faithfulness...

Lord help me to spend some time in your word, being faithful, and trusting in your faithfulness...

I have a desk clock (a gift from my lovely wife) with "Joshua 1:9" inscribed on the front...a good reminder to me, and all of us.

It takes courage to stand up and be courageous. Especially in the culture in which we live today. Your words made me think about what ways I have failed to stand up for my faith and beliefs. Check out my blog on clergy emotional health at http://rodazone.blogspot.com
