13 Stones

At the gym this morning, I was talking with a friend about Glenn Beck's global warming special on Headline News last night. I was a little disappointed in the fact that the warming temperature was given in Celsius (as 0.7). We don't use Celsius much in this country (I'm writing from the USA (that was a note to my vast audience of international readers)). I think they may have done it last night to make it sound like it is less. 0.7 degrees Celsius is 1.26 degrees Fahrenheit. See what I mean?

So another guy says that he weighs 16.1 stones and that his target weight is 16 stones. Pretty cool...this whole "other measurement unit" thing can really work to our advantage! Yes, it is true, I weigh 13 stones! Awesome!!!

So then, how do we manipulate the truth of God to suit our own particulars slants and desires....?

You don't really buy into this global warming crap do you? I don't know how to post links, but copy this to your address box and see how the rise in temperature is directly related to the decrease in the number of pirates.

Point being. You can make numbers represent anything that you want.

Thanks brother. I still read your blog. Just don't respond as much anymore.

Brett...if you are 13 stones, I am at least 1 boulder. About that global warming stuff, I try to have a small carbon footprint, as compared to the high priest of global warming Al Gore, who lectures me but has 2 private jets, four houses and 20 times the energy use of the average American. So much for practicing what we preach. Glad you're working out , trying to take off an extra stone or two.

Ben,

Of course I don't buy it. But I was a little disappointed that Glenn was using some smoke and mirrors there.

Also, I can't wait to check out that blog! Sounds like fun!

1. Statistics will tell you anything you want.

2. People will use scripture like statistics. They will proof-text to justify anything that they do.

3. People use there personal life to justify scripture.

4. People will use church to justify their comfortable lifestyle.

5. I know that's scriptural, "I just don't know where I read that." I don't know how many times I've heard that said.

Here's another way that we slant the truth. We have free will and we choose to do things, yet we always blame someone or something else.

I have a Calvin and Hobbes book in a room where I like to sit and read. One strip goes like this.

C: I hate this time of eyar. I've got to be good for two more weeks if I want any goodies for christmas. I'll never make it.

C: I try to be good! I do! My heart is as pure as driven snow! It's just that, well, sometimes events beyond my control conspire against me!

C: I'm usually an innocent bystand . . . Hey, I saw you roll your eyes! So you don't believe me, Eh! H: Me???

C: (as calvin and Hobbes are grappling) By golly, each of your eyes will be rolling toward the other when I'm through with you!

We all manipulate; it's part of who we are as human beings (except for Greg, who's a mutant). Those who are the best at mainipulation often rise to the top in this broken world.

In the Church, we often prooftext; I've found that those on the extreme right or extreme left do it most often. In fact, there's a line in our Conference Rules which asks that each piece of legislation have Scripture attached to it...so, in efefct, we're asking people to prooftext!

So, we need to keep one another exegetically accountable.
